*NEW! Announcing STEP 2010!

The Center for Disabilities Studies, University of Delaware is pleased to announce the 2010 Summer Education Transition Program (STEP), an interactive week-long college experience for young adults with disabilities ages 16 - 21.

From July 11 through July 16, 2010 STEP students will live in a UD campus dormitory, participate in workshops, hear guest speakers, and be actively involved in a variety of learning experiences on campus and in the community.  The entire week is aimed at promoting successful transition to adulthood by giving participants opportunities to learn and practice skills necessary to achieving their goals. In the evening, the students participate in fun, hands-on activities and social events. The week-long learning opportunity culminates in a graduation ceremony on the last day.

The cost for the program is $1,500 and includes all meals, dormitory housing, educational classes, evening activities, and materials. STEP does not offer nor provide compensation for any type of personal assistance or care; however students and families may make arrangements to secure these services on their own.

Applications are currently being accepted for the 2010 program and must be received by the Center for Disabilities Studies by March 29th.

NCQA seeks public comment on a core set of topics on patient experiences for evaluating practices that want to serve as medical homes. All topics are based on patient surveys/experiences of care.

Please tell us what topics of patient experiences you think NCQA should include when evaluating medical homes.

Click here to access the public comment on patient experiences.

A medical home is a medical office or clinic where a team of health professionals work together to provide a new, expanded type of care to patients. Having a medical home feels like having an "old-style," traditional family doctor, but with a team of professionals that uses modern knowledge and technology to provide the best possible care for you in one location.

NCQA will consider the recommended topics of patient experience as we develop the next version of our evaluation criteria.

Members of the public are invited to comment through March 5.

NCQA appreciates the time and effort organizations invest in providing comments. All feedback submitted within the public comment period is reviewed by NCQA.

For more information on public comment, contact NCQA Customer Support at (888) 275-7585.

MCHB Chartbook

The Maternal and Child Health Bureau (MCHB) will be celebrating its 75th birthday this fall! As part of that celebration, MCHB is producing a document that highlights the progress made over the past 10 years in moving toward the 6 MCHB goals (increased medical homes; increased family satisfaction with decision making and services; adequate health coverage; improved screening; and improved transition services).

The purpose of this document is to describe concrete, positive changes that have occurred for children, youth, and adults with special health care needs and for their families over the past decade.  These changes might include: enhanced family partnerships with professionals; increased youth involvement; improved care coordination; more medical homes; improved access to private and/or public health insurance; more comprehensive screening; better organized community- based services and supports; or improved access to transition services. This document is not meant to be academic, but rather a compilation of stories that are written from the heart with passion and excitement. Photos, poems, and drawings are also welcome. Think back several years and from your perspective, consider how the lives of individuals with special health needs and their families have improved between 2000 and 2010, then, write about how!

Please remember:

- Multiple submissions can be made from any person, community or state.

- Keep submissions to 500 words or less.

- Deadline for submissions is March 15, 2010.

- If your photo is used, you will receive a letter of release with signature request.

- The audience is all of our partners, families, youth, policy makers, legislators, and the general public.

- Target date for publication completion is Fall 2010.

- ANYONE is eligible to submit: parent, professional, community service organization, youth, medical community, grandparents, etc.

SEIZURES & EPILEPSY EDUCATION

We’re delighted that Dr. Robert Mittan and his fabulous S.E.E. Program is coming back to Delaware again. This is a seminar for families coping with epilepsy. For families new to the diagnosis, this seminar is absolutely invaluable. For families who have attended before, you’ll pick up different things than you did last time because you’re in a different place. Clients keep telling us it changes your life and the way you experience epilepsy. It’s a fantastic program!

This one day seminar will be held at the Nemours A. I. DuPont Hospital for Children. Please call the Epilepsy Foundation of Delaware office at 302/999-9313 or email to efd@efde.org for more information and a registration form.
